NCUK International Foundation Year (NCUK-IFY)

Entry Directory 2011-12

Important information for all courses and institutions
Successful completion of an NCUK programme guarantees you a place leading to an appropriate degree at a partner university. The minimum grades required in order to be eligible for the NCUK guarantee are based on results in two subject modules plus EAP (English for Academic Purposes) or Key Skills. In addition to EAP D in each component (or Key Skills grade D), students must achieve a minimum of two 'D' grades (120 NCUK points) in subject modules. The final subject marks are given as grades and these grades equate to points. This is shown in the table below. Universities express their offers in terms of subject points (some universities will still ask for minimum grades).
Please note that the entry requirements given in the entry directory for any of the universities are guidelines and may be subject to change.
IFY Grade IFY Marking Criteria: IFY Points
A* Exceptional performance.  Clear logical thinking, lucidly expressed.  Evidence of originality. 140
A Excellent – demonstrated learning of a high standard with clear evidence of application and synthesis. 120
B Good – demonstrated competence, well-developed approach to the subject.  Ability to apply concepts and synthesise material. 100
C Satisfactory – average performance, demonstrated strengths and weaknesses.  Reasonable knowledge and understanding of the subject. 80
D Adequate – sufficient performance.  Work characterised by errors and omissions.  Some misunderstandings of basic concepts and principles. 60
E Barely adequate performance. Weak understanding of conceptual frameworks.  Many errors and omissions, confused exposition of issues.  Poor understanding of class notes and/or little evidence of independent study. 40
U Ungraded – totally insubstantial, absent, incomplete or inadequate work. 0
For some universities where the courses are popular they will say students must achieve certain grades for example B(EAP) AAB. In this case the student must get a B in EAP and AAB in his/her subject modules.
English Language Requirements
All students are required to have a sufficient command of English in order to cope with the demands of a degree course. For students from most countries, this means they must study English for Academic Purposes (EAP) in order to improve their reading, writing, speaking and listening skills in an academic environment. At the end of the course, students must reach a minimum of an overall EAP grade D with no component less than a D (Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking) to be placed by NCUK. However, many universities require higher grades, depending upon the course and university.
Some students may already have sufficient language skills. This is often true for students from Kenya and Nigeria. In this case, universities will ask for alternative evidence of their language ability, such as their secondary school English qualification. Where applicable, this is highlighted in the directory entries. However, students not studying EAP will be required to pass the NCUK Key Skills module (grade D).
