Deciphering the Code of Life

Through continuing evolution, genes stand as the master weavers, knitting together the essence of human beings and forming the subtle tapestry of organisms with the precise craft of a cosmic artist. In this age, the necessity of genetic exploration cannot be denied since its core mission is not only to trace the origin of the vivid world around us but also to preserve our future, achieving eternity. Carrying curiosity and ambition in their hearts, faculties and students in HFI began the adventure towards the genetic world.

China National GeneBank --- Preserving for Humanity’s Future

The China National GeneBank  (CNGB) is located in the “Hetang Zai” plot of Dapeng district, Shenzhen. It was built in a beautiful luxuriant environment, among Guanyin Mountain, and its design was inspired by the Hani rice terraces on the cover of an issue of Science magazine, which published a landmark 2002 edition of the world's first decoding of the rice genome by Chinese scientists.

HFIers’ adventure began from the main entrance gate. Catching the eye, the five Chinese characters of “China National GeneBank ” are noticeably made of meticulously polished timber. Additionally, those timbers were lychee wood that was lumbered from the vicinity of Guanyin Mountain, showcasing the message of a symbiotic relationship between human beings and nature, one of the core missions of genetic exploration.

Stepping onto the first floor, students’ vision was widened while the stairs ascended. In this place, filled with cutting-edge genetic biotechnology, various specialized labs are full of gene sequencers and automatic robots. These machines’ accuracy in genome sequencing is successfully guaranteed by using optical theories. From sample preparation and sequencing to final data examinations, the working process has realized scientific information management and automation.

Zooming out of the main building, the adjacent landscape is also remarkable. The light-toned National Gene Bank is perfectly assimilated into nature, providing the dual joy of excavating the code of life and admiring extraordinary scenery. Streams bubbled between stones, the air pervaded with vitality, and countless verdant trees and bushes donned the mantle of the brightest green. The sika deer and the ostrich on the gentlest massif were the final surprise of the trip. Standing elegantly and peacefully, it was as if they purposefully brushed aside affection from surrounding onlookers to enjoy the sole pleasantness of their exclusive afternoon tea.

After meeting these adorable creatures, the HFIers went on another novel venture.

Beijing Genomics Institute --- Standing on Cutting Edge

The headquarters of the Beijing Genomics Institute (BGI) was the destination of these young ambitious future scientists’ one-day venture. Meanwhile, a mind-blowing lecture was awaiting them.

From gene sequencing and how genetics can help the aquaculture industry to case studies on distinguishing valuable species, Professor Sun from BGI gave an insightful lecture on gene technology and biodiversity conservation. The students actively interacted with Professor. Sun, discussing issues related to biological genes and animal experiment ethics and even proposing creative solutions for the current species population protection. Laughs and professional knowledge intersected, echoing and engraving facts regarding genomes in students’ minds.

HFIers then took a more detailed look at the architecture around them, filled with a sense of modern technology. Surrounding them, samples of various genome-sequencing machines, and innovative products were shown through transparent glass. Mr. Sun also pointed out several promising orientations for students interested in bio-techs, such as synthetic biology, neuroscience, etc.

Envisaging the Future

With the continuous advancement and application of genetic technologies, humanity is poised to embrace unprecedented potential opportunities and challenges. The China National Gene Bank and the Beijing Genomics Institute, both pivotal forces leading genetic exploration and innovations, will continue to play crucial roles in unraveling the mysteries of life. On the path ahead, society looks forward to more aspiring young, constructive minds joining the research and innovations in genetic technologies, jointly establishing a beautiful, nurturing, and prosperous future.
