Y10 GE Debate Reflection

Y10 GE Debate Reflection

Class: Demis   Name: Ke (Kyler) Xu

I believe that this GE debate activity was a highly integrated and well-designed experience, combining the practice of oral speaking, critical thinking, listening, and note-taking. It required intensive teamwork while ensuring that each student had a chance to shine. From our teacher's clear instructions to our individual research on assigned topics, every aspect of the debate was carefully planned to boost engagement and intellectual growth.

In the first phase of the project, our GE teacher, Dolores, walked us through the debate process and analyzed the essential components needed for our participation. She also introduced us to several logical fallacies—such as the Slippery Slope and Circular Reasoning—to reinforce our understanding of reasoning and challenge us to think critically.

One of the most impressive parts of the debate was its strong emphasis on teamwork. The way teams were organized encouraged collaboration and mutual support, which was key to our success. Every member played a distinct role during the preparation stage—whether it was researching, crafting arguments, or delivering rebuttals—ensuring that everyone contributed meaningfully.

Additionally, the structure of the debate itself was commendable. The timed opening statements, rebuttals, and summaries kept the discussion focused and efficient, while giving everyone an equal opportunity to present their case. The crossfire segment, in particular, was a highlight. This fast-paced exchange of questions and answers pushed us to think on our feet, sharpen our analytical skills, and defend our positions under pressure. It also encouraged active listening, as we had to engage with opposing arguments and respond thoughtfully.

In conclusion, the debate activity was incredibly valuable in both design and execution. It not only provided a platform for meaningful discussion but also helped us develop essential skills such as critical thinking, public speaking, and collaboration. I am truly grateful to have been part of such a well-organized and enriching experience, and I look forward to applying the lessons I’ve learned in future endeavors.
