Why was Womxn founded?
As we delve deeper into health issues and acquire more scientific knowledge, you might be surprised to learn that the seemingly objective and impartial modern medical system has some problems that have a profound impact on women. Although these issues may appear to be reasonable experimental designs, they actually reflect gender bias.
Data and surveys reveal a startling fact: in a large number of drug clinical trials, only about 37% of the subjects are women. A significant number of clinical trials exclude women under the guise of “protecting them,” ignoring the impact of gender factors on drug efficacy. This means that the safety and effectiveness data of many drugs we take are primarily based on research conducted on male bodies. They assume that if something makes sense in men, it must also make sense in women.
Is this assumption valid? Why does it exist? For a long time in the past, a seemingly “well-intentioned” idea dominated research protocols: to protect women from potential experimental risks, they were often excluded from early clinical trials. The rationale was the concern that drugs might be harmful to fetuses or affect women’s reproductive systems. However, this “protection” overlooked the unique characteristics of women’s bodies. Women have lower stomach acid levels, which may lead to higher drug absorption rates; estrogen affects the metabolism of many drugs. Moreover, women are more likely to experience false positives in ECGs, which are often misdiagnosed as “anxiety.”
This exclusion in the name of “protection” has created a significant gap in health knowledge. To change this situation, we founded the Women’s Health Society—Womxn. We are committed to documenting and sharing women’s medical experiences, women’s physiology, and health knowledge, and conducting科普 activities to let more people understand the needs of women in healthcare. True protection is not exclusion, but equal understanding and precise care.
This semester will primarily reveal the gender bias issues existing in the current medical system. 1. We will analyze why there is a low proportion of female participants in drug clinical trials and how this phenomenon leads to unique risks for women in terms of drug safety and efficacy. 2. We will analyze the differences in physiological functions between females and males from the perspective of biological expertise and discuss the role of female hormones and biochemical characteristics in various health fields. These two topics will be the main focus of this semester to help students understand how the current medical system affects women's health both generally and specifically.
