The Problem Lab

The Problem Lab

The Problem Lab
The Problem Lab is an academic practice community that uses images as a research medium. Unlike other clubs, we are committed to systematically observing, documenting, and publicly presenting social issues. We view the lens as an epistemological tool—not only to capture surface phenomena but also to perceive structural social predicaments and reveal marginalized experiences obscured by mainstream narratives.

In our research approach, we comprehensively employ methods such as documentary filming, in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and visual narrative analysis to investigate and construct textual accounts of issues including educational equity, urban spatial justice, intergenerational cultural conflicts, and environmental changes. Each short film or photographic work undergoes four stages: topic deliberation, field collection, narrative editing, and peer review, striving to balance visual aesthetics and sociological significance.

The club regularly hosts thematic workshops, visual academic salons, and public screening events, inviting people engage in dialogues, promoting interdisciplinary problem reframing. We are dedicated to transforming research outcomes into public communication resources, enabling academic observation to intervene in real-world issues and spark substantive social discussions.

The Problem Lab does not seek to provide simple answers, but rather to visualize and concretize complex issues, offering reliable visual archives and critical reflective spaces for deepening social understanding.

The Problem Lab will advance its research this academic year around two major themes: "Fluid Boundaries" in the fall and "Echoes of Generations" in the spring, ensuring that at least two documentary short films are produced each semester. The fall semester focuses on urban spatial justice, simultaneously filming two shorts—Inside and Outside the Walls (about a demolition community) and The Dawn Market (about a wholesale produce market)—each 5–10 minutes long. During this period, workshops and internal peer reviews are held, and in January the works are published on public platforms, accompanied by photographic works and an analytical report. The spring semester turns to intergenerational family culture, completing Father's Toolbox (oral history) and Divergence at the Dinner Table (comparative observation), with home-based filming from March to May, and an annual portfolio published in June. Each video undergoes four stages: topic selection, field collection, narrative editing, and peer review, supplemented by regular member training and public events, to ensure both academic rigor and social dissemination. No fewer than four videos are produced over the full year.
